Drug – Drug Interaction in The Management of Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension- Diabetes Co-morbidity: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Drug interaction is defined as the modification of the effects of a drug (object drug) by the prior and/or the concomitant administration of another drug (precipitant drug). Drug interaction may either increase or decrease the intended effect of one or both drugs. It may transform the diagnostic, preventive or therapeutic activity of any drug. Diabetes Mellitus is a major chronic life threatening disorder, characterized by the homeostasis of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism improperly regulated by insulin thereby, resulting in an increased level of blood glucose, it affects about 382 million people worldwide. Hypertension is the chronic elevation of systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure and it is the most common chronic disease, it is a common risk factor for death throughout the world and accounts for about 12.8% of the total of all the deaths. The main objective of this review was to identify drug interactions in the management of hypertensive patients, diabetic patients and co-morbid hypertensive-diabetic patients using Cinahl, Google scholar and MEDLINE (via PubMed) from 2009 to 2019, based on prescription analysis The study showed that many potential drug interactions occurred in patients hospitalized for hypertension and diabetes. Most interactions occurred between antihypertensive agents, also between antihypertensive agents and other drugs, while some occurred between antihypertensiveagents and anti-diabetic agents. Poly pharmacy is associated with increased risk of drug interactions. The study recommends that, continuous medical education of healthcare workers on drug interactions should be initiated and done continuously.
